The Story

This is a convenient tool and supply out-post that you place in the garden.  Now your trowel, twine, pruning shears and gloves will be kept dry, secure and just a few steps away from your plants.  This is also a great place to stash your cell phone, sun screen, water bottle, etc, while you work in the yard.

Lately I have been interested in Shou-Sugi-Ban, the Japanese ancient art of preserving wood siding by burning and charring the surface.  I thought that this small garden structure would be an interesting subject on which to explore the possibilities, so I created a few models that celebrate this technique.

In the process, I burn the exposed surface side until deeply charred.  The flame is extinguised and the board is rinsed with water and a light brushing.  The brushing removes the loose char.  After the surface dries, natural oil is rub applied, for additional protection and to bring out the luster.  

Different wood species produce somewhat different results in appearance.  In these units, I am using White Pine.  The result is a surface that is rich in tone from caramel brown to deep black.  The surface is lightly  textured, yet has an amazing silk-like sheen and smoothness.  

The Description

A high quality piece that is hand crafted in New Jersey using select materials.  Designed to blend beautifully into the landscape and built to last for years.

All joints are tightly fastened with screws and glue.  All screw holes are wood plugged for a fine finished look.

Constructed of White Pine, the exterior is done in Shou-Sugi-Ban, and the interior sides are smooth sanded with semi-transparent stain finish. 

The roof is rough sawn White Pine boards with a semi-transparent tinted stain.

Brushed Satin Nickel door knob and hinges.

A chalk board is attached to the interior of the door.  Chalk and eraser are included.

4x4x66 inch Cedar post, done in Shou-Sugi-Ban, is included.  *Unit is also available without the post*
